The US Open Championship trophy went to Mamaroneck’s Winged Foot Golf Club in New York, on Monday and more importantly, the tournament will spend a week in the club in 2020.
John Schneider, the Winged Foot president and Greenwich resident, along with Thomas J. O’Toole Jr, the USGA vice president, posed with the US Open trophy after revealing this news – Winged Foot Club will hold the US Open in 2020.
The selection marks the sixth time the West Course at Winged Foot Golf Club will attract the best golfers in the world. It will also be the 12th USGA championship played at Winged Foot, with all but three taking place on the West Course. The 2020 U.S. Open is scheduled to be held June 18-21.
Even though the tournament is years away, the likes of Unibet and other online betting companies will have Rory McIlroy down as the favourite – by then he will be hitting his peak years as a golfer – might be worth an online bet!
Schneider said that Winged Foot is honored to have the USGA select it as the host. The club’s relationship with the USGA goes back to 1929, when Bob Jones defeated Al Espinosa to win the U.S. Open in a playoff. The relationship has been cherished by both ever since. Their 2 Tillinghast courses have always risen to the challenge of identifying the top golfers in the world. Winged Foot anxiously awaits its next group of challengers.
O’Toole said that this is really a great region for them to offer a national championship. Corporate America and the vibrant New York golf rooters are here.
