Tumbling Down the Rabbit Hole: Anski Edition

by Anski on September 11, 2009

This week is my turn for a Friday post. It seems like Karnatos has a leaky roof in his igloo, and it won’t stop blizzarding enough in the Great White North for him to be able to patch it up. He’s been trying to watch for a break in the weather with his oil-powered TV, but it doesn’t get good reception. (On a side note, I am engaged to a Canadian so I can kind of get away with these jokes, right?)

Sadly, I don’t have my fingers all over the web like Karn does, so this probably won’t be as exciting as his stuff. Instead, we’ll call this INFORMATION FRIIIDAAAYY.

What information, you ask? About us, of course!

I Used to Make Friends

by Anski on September 10, 2009

GamingI‘ve realized something lately. Maybe it is nostalgia kicking in… or maybe those enchiladas I had. Probably nostalgia. I’ve come to the conclusion that I have a hard time making friends online anymore, and I don’t mean friends on Facebook or any of its ilk. I used to be quite the Internet social butterfly, but that seems to have changed lately.

I could sit for hours in chatrooms. I knew everyone, everyone knew me. But this isn’t exactly what this article is about. This is referring to my life inside MMOs.

I haven’t lost you yet, have I?

Game for Life

by Anski on September 9, 2009

Extra LifeGreetings all of you AGR readers! I come to you today with a very special proposition. If you have been on the Internet, and you like to play games, then hopefully you have heard of Extra Life. If you haven’t, Extra Life was started last year by the people behind sarcasticgamer.com. In essence, it is a marathon gaming event to help fight pediatric cancer. The players seek sponsors (and themselves) to donate money that goes to cancer research. Well… here, the official explanation:

Extra Life is a 24-hour charity gaming marathon that aims to raise money to fight pediatric cancer.  Extra Life is working in partnership with Texas Children’s Hospital and all funds are earmarked for the Texas Children’s Cancer Center.

It’s really easy to help out.  All you have to do is sign up at the Texas Children’s Hospital donation site for Extra Life.  The site makes it easy to send out requests for donations to people you know.  Those people donate and you get credit for obtaining the donation.  On October 17th at 8am (in your local timezone) you just play games for 24 hours.  It’s that simple.

You can check the site FAQ for answers to common questions about Extra Life.  However, if you still have more questions or comments, head on over to ouractive forum community and you’re certain to find the support you need.

This year we’re looking forward to building on last year’s tremendous success, with your help.

So what does this all have to do with AGR? I’ll tell you…

Artificial Energy

by Anski on June 11, 2009

It’s happened to all of us… you’re up late getting headshots, killing zombies with friends (or beating up your friends as a zombie), blasting aliens,  or raiding Ulduar and saying “just one more time!” for the last 5 tries, all the while forgetting (or at least disregarding) that you have work in the morning. Or maybe just realizing that you might not have enough to keep going, and risk the ridicule from your peers of not being able to stay up. So what do you turn to for your energy needs?

Below I will take a look at a few of my favorites, and hopefully you all will give me some new ideas on things to try as well!

Internet Security and You. Also, WoW.

by Anski on May 5, 2009

We’ve all heard about people who have their online accounts hacked, but how many of you actually think it will happen to you? It’s like some horrible accident that you don’t really think about doing some simple steps to protect yourself from because you think “oh, that will never happen to me.”

And what happens when it does? You think back to all of the things you could have done, the signs you should have seen leading up to the event and think, “why didn’t I do something?”

I’m going to start this off with a link to a blog post by Senior Technology Consultant Graham Cluley over at Sophos. It talks about some basic Internet password security, and can be found right here. After checking that out, hit the jump for why I’m even writing this article and simple steps everyone should be taking to protect their online identities.

Help Cure Cancer with Music

by Anski on March 19, 2009

Okay, so I have been pondering a subject to write about lately, and something finally came up and slapped me square in the face. I’ve recently gotten back into spending time at thesixtyone.com, which we have talked about before here at AGR. I’ve gone back after a long absence pretty much directly because of the person I was planning on writing about anyway - composer Josh Whelchel, from such indie games as The Spirit Engine I/II and Bonesaw: The Game.

I’ve been becoming more active with Twitter (@Anskiere), and started following him (@soundofjw) there as well. We’ve had some friendly exchanges and I came to realize he is heading up a good cause, and the real reason for my posting.

Nostalgia with a Kick, Part Ménage à Trois

by Anski on February 18, 2009

It’s that time of the week again! Well… actually I can’t really say that since I skipped last week. I knew I should have written these all at once instead of a day before they were due! It is like being in school all over again! AHH!! ….. …. ANYWAY!

In part one of the series, I covered my two favourite games ever. Part two brought up some of the best NES games that I could think of. Part three… part three will now introduce you (well, hopefully you have played them already) to my picks for best of the best ye olden PC games! Yaaaaaaaaaayy~
