Let The Right One In

by Karnatos on September 24, 2009

Let The Right One In <--- loooooved this movie!Today was pretty much a write-off.

While I did get some job hunting done, I was really under the weather and wishing I could speak with my normal voice… sadly I spent the day possessed by someone that speaks with the same verbiage as me but sounds something like a cross between a chain-smoker and an over-excited schoolboy going through puberty; I could not get 4 words strung together without my voice cracking or wisping into silence, which would be truly entertaining were I not be looking for work and preparing for interviews.

As I lie on the sofa, I flipped through the movies I’d recorded on the PVR, hoping there was something half-way interesting… and what I got was far more than that - this movie was simply fantastic.

I’m not sure who has, and who has not, heard of Let The Right One In. I’ve been aware for this movie for some time now, and as things are with several movies out there, I’d always meant to find the time to watch this one. I pulled down the blinds, grabbed a blanket, and curled up on the sofa to watch yet another movie.

Stardust

by Karnatos on September 23, 2009

C8 H9 NO2 - Confused? Clicky Clicky!Yesterday I spent the day today trying to feel better - seems I’ve picked up some sort of bug. I had the chills all day accompanied by cold sweats, stuffy nose, and a very slight fever… perfect for job hunting, really.

Well, I managed to find a couple spots to apply to, and once I’d sent off copies of my resume I needed to relax, vegetate, and hoped that a couple of Tylenols and a short rest on the sofa would help cure my craptastic state.

As my luck would have it Stardust was going to be on, so I set up the PVR to record (in case I fell asleep), made myself some tea, and plopped down to watch a movie.

I’d always meant to watch Stardust - I remember when it came out that people I knew were surprised that I had not gone to see the movie. Well, a couple of years later and I’d still not seen Stardust, it was time for me to sit down and watch.

Caprica: Pilot Episode

by Karnatos on September 22, 2009

BeefaroniOn my first day of actual unemployment, I decided to check out the job scene and get a good feel for what is out there in this fine Canadian city - but once I was pleased with my day’s job-hunting endeavors I pulled myself away from the computer, put away my note pad, and headed downstairs for a mid-afternoon lunch.

I made myself some damn-fine Beefaroni (I love you Chef Boyardee!!), turned on the television and parked myself on the sofa to finally watch me some Caprica.

The first thing I noticed about this DVD release is that it started playing TV spots right away, which kind of surprised me a little. I am not sure why I was surprised, it’s not like I don’t have a ton of movies that start the same way, but it did surprise me a little to be watching commercials. I am currently watching the Veronica Mars television series (I can’t believe I did not watch this show when it was on television - fantastic stuff, but that’s for another post on a different day) and it does not start right into commercials, if I am not mistaken… perhaps I am just quick with the menu button on my remote when watching VM, and with me spoon in-hand shoveling down Beefaroni I might have just been slow enough to notice the commercials… but I don’t think so.

No big though, I skipped the commercials and went right for the main feature; Caprica.

What can I say… this is no Battlestar Galactica.

I am LinkedIn

by Karnatos on September 17, 2009

I am LinkedInYou might be aware that I am currently looking for work. Since I am in that mode I thought I’d share some thoughts on the popular LinkedIn social network for professionals.

First of all, I am sure that I am just scraping the surface as to what LinkedIn has to offer; if there’s more than what I’ve seen so far, I’ll follow up with info, but for the most part LinkedIn is similar to many other social networks out there… just without the constant chatter. It seems as though LinkedIn is more about signal than noise, where as other popular networks are just the opposite. This is a good thing, it being aimed at professionals, for whom the majority of its active user-base would be people looking for work; if there were too much noise it would just be irritating, and people are usually already over-stressed when they find themselves out of work, they don’t want to be sifting through crap to get some serious work done.

Tumbling Down the Rabbit Hole: Anski Edition

by Anski on September 11, 2009

This week is my turn for a Friday post. It seems like Karnatos has a leaky roof in his igloo, and it won’t stop blizzarding enough in the Great White North for him to be able to patch it up. He’s been trying to watch for a break in the weather with his oil-powered TV, but it doesn’t get good reception. (On a side note, I am engaged to a Canadian so I can kind of get away with these jokes, right?)

Sadly, I don’t have my fingers all over the web like Karn does, so this probably won’t be as exciting as his stuff. Instead, we’ll call this INFORMATION FRIIIDAAAYY.

What information, you ask? About us, of course!

I Used to Make Friends

by Anski on September 10, 2009

GamingI‘ve realized something lately. Maybe it is nostalgia kicking in… or maybe those enchiladas I had. Probably nostalgia. I’ve come to the conclusion that I have a hard time making friends online anymore, and I don’t mean friends on Facebook or any of its ilk. I used to be quite the Internet social butterfly, but that seems to have changed lately.

I could sit for hours in chatrooms. I knew everyone, everyone knew me. But this isn’t exactly what this article is about. This is referring to my life inside MMOs.

I haven’t lost you yet, have I?

Game for Life

by Anski on September 9, 2009

Extra LifeGreetings all of you AGR readers! I come to you today with a very special proposition. If you have been on the Internet, and you like to play games, then hopefully you have heard of Extra Life. If you haven’t, Extra Life was started last year by the people behind sarcasticgamer.com. In essence, it is a marathon gaming event to help fight pediatric cancer. The players seek sponsors (and themselves) to donate money that goes to cancer research. Well… here, the official explanation:

Extra Life is a 24-hour charity gaming marathon that aims to raise money to fight pediatric cancer.  Extra Life is working in partnership with Texas Children’s Hospital and all funds are earmarked for the Texas Children’s Cancer Center.

It’s really easy to help out.  All you have to do is sign up at the Texas Children’s Hospital donation site for Extra Life.  The site makes it easy to send out requests for donations to people you know.  Those people donate and you get credit for obtaining the donation.  On October 17th at 8am (in your local timezone) you just play games for 24 hours.  It’s that simple.

You can check the site FAQ for answers to common questions about Extra Life.  However, if you still have more questions or comments, head on over to ouractive forum community and you’re certain to find the support you need.

This year we’re looking forward to building on last year’s tremendous success, with your help.

So what does this all have to do with AGR? I’ll tell you…
