When I was young I read a lot of fantasy novels. I still do (not quite as much). But it seems that back in the day there were more fantasy books that also were very funny. This subgenre of fantasy/humor was a favorite of mine. I could be wrong, but I think there are much less novels in that vein today. I’m not saying there are none (i.e. Terry Pratchett) but I definitely recall there being a lot more when I was a kid. I’m not sure that this is at all valid proof but Wikipedia’s short summary of comic fantasy novels only lists pretty old books. Even those they call “modern” are from quite a few years back.
But I’m still a fan of the genre, which is why you would think I would jump at the chance to watch a humor based fantasy television series. I was surprised to hear one was even actually being aired…Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire. When I saw the commercials on Comedy Central, I intended to watch it. But I wasn’t that fired up because I had a feeling it would be corny and have the kind of humor featured in Meet the Spartans, which I thought sucked. And when it came out - there was absolutely zero buzz. I mean nothing. I didn’t see any discussion on internet forums. None of my geek friends even mentioned it or was watching it. And that’s a bad sign when geeks aren’t watching a fantasy series.
But I was watching TV one night and checking out Comedy Central on Demand and I saw you could watch Krod episodes. I figured…why not. Believe it or not, for the most part - I ended up liking it.
