Since Karn was brave enough to confess his Twilight experience, I thought I’d report on my recent viewing of a vampire flick. Now, I’m sure you’re thinking: Oh, Aggro must have gone to see Underworld: Rise of the Lycans since it just came out. Well, that certainly would be more topical and useful but…no. I actually just finally saw the original Underworld, which came out in 2003. Yep, I’m certainly behind the times on this one.
I waited so long because I’m not really into vampire movies and the reviews on Metacritic were pretty bad. Also, what little I knew of the film (vampire falls in love with werewolf though they are at war) sounded like a pretty cheesy Romeo & Juliet knockoff. But when I saw the commercials for the third film I figured there had to be some kind of fanbase if they were making another movie. And I noticed the user reviews on Metacritic were a lot higher on average than those of the professional reviewers. The DVD was also rated an average of 4 stars on Amazon. So I figured there had to be something to it and I decided to check the film out.
I usually like movies with great dialogue, terrific character development and at least a smattering of humor. Underworld has none of those things. But yet, to my surprise, I actually ended up liking it.
