Growing up, I was always a Marvel fanboy who basically ignored the majority of the DC universe. I just found Marvel comics to be more interesting and compelling reading. And one of my favorite characters in the Marvel world was Doctor Strange, the Sorceror Supreme. He was just so different from the majority of superheroes and mutants, relying on magic and spellcasting. The art was incredible…the artists handled the depiction of magical powers and otherworldy realms so beautifully. And the guy was just a total badass. I mean, he lived in a sick mansion called the Sanctum Santorum (what a great name) right in New York City, located on Bleecker in Greenwich Village. I loved the invocations he spouted when he performed magic (”By the hoary hosts of Hoggoth!”) and the names of his awesome spells (”Shield of the Seraphim”). What can I say, I’ve always thought wizards were freaking cool.
So I was pretty excited to rent the full-length animated feature Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme. I don’t think Strange is one of the more popular characters in the comic world so I was happy they decided to dedicate a whole animated film to him. Even though I was disappointed in the other Marvel animated film I saw (The Invincible Iron Man
), I had high hopes for Doctor Strange. Unfortunately, those hopes were pretty much dashed upon viewing the feature.
