Wow. I get to write the first actual post for 2009. That’s quite an honor.
I hope that everyone had a great Holiday, I know I’ve been enjoying myself spending quality time with my Family and Friends.
But it is time to get things started for 2009, and I don’t want to bog this post down with a long introduction… so let’s get down to business. Here’s some of the really cool stuff that can be found online, as I have chronicled over on my tumblog:
- BUFFY: Season One TRAILER
- BUFFY: Season Two TRAILER
- Left 4k Dead
- David Lee Roth “Runnin’ With The Devil” Soundboard
- Speed Portrait in iPhone Brushes
- Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve 2009
BUFFY: Season One TRAILER
… and …
BUFFY: Season Two TRAILER
“You have fruit-punch mouth…”
- Buffy
I know. I know! It’s a brand new year and how do I start things off? Look, I have no shame folks; it starts off with something Buffy!
I came across these two trailers this past week and I have to say that they are rather impressive. I especially enjoyed the Season One trailer, but Season Two’s is top notch stuff too.
If you are like I was this time last year, and you have managed to avoid watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I think that watching the Season One trailer is all that would be required to pique one’s interest into watching it. I can’t imagine how it wouldn’t. Give these two trailers a watch and tell me you are not at least a bit curious, and tempted to give it a try… it’s giving me the urge to fire it up again tonight!
Anyways, these two trailers are very cool for the Buffy fans out there, but they might just be the type of thing that hooks some new viewers.
The trailers’ creator, buffyverse12, only has 3 videos online… but I hope that he or she gets the urge to create trailers for the rest of the Buffy seasons, because these two just beg to have more done.
Left 4k Dead
This makes me wish my PC was newer than it is. I cannot imagine how much fun the actual Left 4 Dead must be if Left 4k Dead is this addictive!
I have easily clocked a couple hours just running around aimlessly, reloading my gun, spinning around wildly as I mow down the zombie nuisances that insists on making me one of their hoard.
Sorry, what was that? What is “Left 4k Dead”? Oh, it is just this little game out there where you kill zombies. It’s free, a hulluvalotta fun to play, and the learning curve is next-to-nil; so get out there and show’em who’s boss around these parts!
David Lee Roth “Runnin’ With The Devil” Soundboard
I don’t have an excuse for this one folks; in all honesty this is nothing more than a silly website that serves no other purpose than to amuse the pea-sized brain inside my cranium.
For some reason Mr. Roth makes me chuckle aloud… and someone’s taken the time to put together a soundboard of him (or someone imitating Diamond Dave) so that I can mash the buttons and make him say funny things?
It’s just pure indulgence for me, folks; please forgive me if you think I’ve lost my mind on this link… LOL!
Speed Portrait in iPhone Brushes
“I wish iPhones were affordable in Canada… Damn you Rogers!!”
- Karnatos
Here’s a cool video that demonstrates how the completely useless iPhone app “Brushes” can be used to create great sketches/paintings, especially when you consider the tool being used.
I’ve never seen the actual application in person, but from what I have gathered everyone finds it nothing short of being useless… except for this guy!
This guy is Stef Kardos, and he’s been uploading his Brushes artwork up to his Flickr site, go and check out some of the other pieces he’s created… it is hard to believe that Brushes is what he used to create those sketches.
OK, so this guy’s got some art-cred working for him; apparently Stef Kardos is an artist working for Disney. At least that explains the ability to actually paint… because this guy’s got one up on me in that department as well.
In the end, I doubt Brushes will be considered as a viable sketching application by anyone other than Stef, or anyone else inspired to try out their handy-work with an iPhone; but if you’ve got an iPhone why not try to sketch something and link to it here… it’d be fun(ny) to see what you come up with!
Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve 2009
OK, a quick warning before you run off and watch this clip - only watch 0:50 to 1:15!!!
If you were all Click-Happy and watched the whole video clip, please please please don’t add me to your hit-list for the Jonas Brothers helltune that comes after the oh-so-freakin-creepy segment with Dick Clark talking.
Seriously, WTF? Why is Dick Clark still hosting this show?
Before anyone gets all upset and hunts me down for making fun of Dick Clark… look, I just think it is time for this guy to hand the torch off to someone else, anyone! Even Seacrest would do!
I had to NOT watch the whole show because I was afraid they’d switch back to Dick the Animatronic Host (brought to you by Disney). I am not kidding, Dick spooked me this New Year’s Eve - and I highly doubt that’s what they were going for.
I am sorry Dick, you are indeed an icon. I have watched you year after year after year counting down the last seconds of years gone by - but this year I couldn’t do it with you man.
For that, I am truly sorry.

Brushes isn’t useless; it’s designed for painting! What other use would you expect? Here are some other amazing Brushes artists:
Goro Fujita
Amanda Kavanagh
Chuck Rose
Kyle Kane
Neco
Everett Rodriguez
iArtMobile Gallery
Steve Sprang,
Brushes developer
Hi Steve,
Woo - thanks for the links. Seriously. I am already a fan of the work over at Gorilla Artfare, and it is eye opening to see people using this mobile medium to paint. Serious Holy-Whack-a-Mole stuff man!
I only know a handful of peeps here in Canada (I can count them on 3 fingers) with an iPhone, and none of them knew of a real use for Brushes. But these folk obviously have either not messed with it much or have no artistic inclinations - likely both, though.
Hmmm, Chuck Rose has some work I like, and Goro is downright awesome. Awe fuck-it, these artist are all awesome Steve! As I check out each link I am all “Hooowaah!”.
Thanks for the link-list and keep the comments coming - I’m all about seeing the cool-side of things online and geeky, and this is freakin’ bang-on!
p.s. - as an aside, I have no idea why your comment require approval, Steve. It might have something to do w/ Wordpress not liking comments w/ a long list of links, but I’ll look into it further to ensure that approval is turned off
Brushes won’t magically grant you artistic skills, but I think it’s a powerful tool in the right hands (as witnessed by the links in my previous message). It’s certainly an inexpensive way to practice painting – even a pack of colored pencils costs more!
I started a flickr group for Brushes artists today. Hopefully it will grow quickly:
Brushes Gallery – iPhone Art
Thanks for the information on the Flickr group Steve
I am happy to say to you’ve proved me and my peers wrong-o on Brushes - it looks as though it can crank out some pretty damned slick artwork.
But, I’ve got a question for you - how difficult is app-dev on iPhones? As a programmer, I’ve often wondered how accommodating/annoying the platform is. I honestly have not ventured down the path to actually checking it out because the costs of owning an iPhone in Canada are ridiculous, so that alone has shied me away from looking into it.
Just curious
And seriously, thanks for setting the record straight on Brushes - my opinion’s changed.
Peace!
:K
Yeah, that’s Diamond Dave all right. Someone released his audio track from “Runnin’ with the Devil” a while back and someone snipped it up for that. Hilarious!
Hahaha! I agree Ethic!
I was messing around with it again tonight while playing EQ2 to annoy a guildie! Audio mixers are awesome for doing stuff like that!
Dave’s just a hoot. heheheheheh
