Pretty much everyone I know loved Mystery Science Theater 3000 (or MST3K as it is more conveniently known). If you’re one of the few people who hasn’t partaken in the greatness, well, MST3K was like watching a hilariously bad movie with a bunch of really funny people. The set-up was that a man and some robot pals were trapped on a satellite by some evil scientist and forced to watch horrible movies. There were some comedy skits but the main, glorious part of the show was watching awful movies with a running commentary from the “peanut gallery.” It was well written and really funny. As I mentioned, many of my friends still talk about it fondly.
But the show is long since off the air, so what is a fan to do? You can grab some DVD’s to relive the glory days…but we want new stuff! Well, I recently discovered the fun of RiffTrax, a project that Mike Nelson and a few other MST3K alums have had going for a while. What the heck is RiffTrax? Well, it’s an audio track with a bunch of funny people just sort of riffing on a movie. It is meant to be played at the same time as you play a DVD of the movie. The audio track will tell you how to synch it to the film. There’s also a program that automatically does it if you are playing the DVD and the audio file in your PC.
