Peggle Nights

Peggle Nights has been around for a while now, but I finally got around to picking it up. PopCap apparently wants twenty bucks for it, but you can grab it on Steam for ten.  It was actually cheaper for me to buy it from Big Fish Games, because I subscribe to their game club credits thingy.

Well, in some ways Peggle Nights has been a disappointment to me.  But on the other hand, every time I sit down at the PC, I can’t seem to stop myself from clicking on the Peggle Nights icon and playing a few rounds.

Peggle Nights is very similar to Peggle, which is both good and bad.  It’s good because Peggle is an amazingly awesome casual game.  But it’s bad because there’s nothing really new or fresh about Peggle Nights.

If you haven’t played Peggle, it’s played on a pachinko-like board.  You aim and shoot a ball with the goal of clearing all of the orange pegs on each level before running out of balls.  There are a ton of blue pegs as well and your ball bounces around like crazy.  Purple pegs give you a big point bonus and the green ones unlock a special power (which varies depending on which Peggle Master you are playing with).  There is also a free-ball bucket which moves back and forth on the bottom of the screen.  You can get a free ball by landing in the bucket or by racking up enough points.  When you clear the level there is a lot of very satisfying sound effects and fireworks.  Peggle is a great mix of luck and skill and is a very addictive pursuit.  It has really solid graphics and sound and I think pretty much everyone who tries it enjoys it.

More on Peggle Nights (including one minor spoiler) after the jump.
