Yes, it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but it’s never too early to start your holiday shopping. Stop groaning, this will be painless if you just stick with me. Okay, my first pick of the season comes from Paizo, venerable purveyors of all things D&D related.
If you’ve read this post of mine on D&D nostalgia, you’ll know I’m a big fan of the TSR licensed line of AD&D action figures. So I was excited to see that Paizo got their hands on a stock of Hook Horror figures complete with “slicing-arms action feature.” Awesome! Okay, these don’t come with the original packaging but for $9.99 that’s a pretty cool piece of history. I see these things on eBay from time to time but they’re usually more in the $20-$30 range. So better snatch one up before they’re all gone!
If you’re curious, here is the Wikipedia page on the Hook Horror. It’s apparently been around since the first edition of AD&D and weighs in at 350 pounds with a height of 9 feet. Not exactly the kind of thing you would want to bump into in a dark alley. The Forgotten Realms Wiki page has more details and a bit of trivia: Dragon Magazine identified the Hook Horror as an herbivore, but the Monster Manual II later stated that they are omnivores, which makes a lot more sense if you take a look at those big hooks. They also like to chow down on silver and electrum - yummy!
