10 Netflix Watch Instantly Geek Picks - Aggro’s Picks

I wish I could watch all of Netflix’s library with their “Watch Instantly” streaming service.  But since I can’t, I’m back with 10 geeky picks (in no particular order) that are available for your streaming pleasure.  Remember, I’m not picking from the entire Netflix collection, just the titles in the “Watch Instantly” section.  

1.  The Adventures of Buckeroo Bonzai - This should really be in the classics section but so many people have never seen it.  I love this movie so much that I have a “Yoyodyne Propulsion” t-shirt and another one that says, “Wherever you go, there you are.”  Seriously, see this if you haven’t already - it’s the definition of “cult classic.” 

2.  Gattaca - Smart, interesting sci-fi with excellent acting.

3.  Ice Pirates - Holy shit, I can’t believe they have this one.  I’m not going to pretend this is a great or even good movie.  But, wow, do I enjoy it…definitely a cheesy delight.  It’s funny both because of the actual jokes in the movie and because it’s so terrible.  The plot?  Well, water is the most valuable commodity in the future so space pirates steal ice.  Space princesses are involved as well.  Swordfighting is also apparently very important in the future because even robots do it.  Ship to ship space combat is decided by playing a Space Invaders clone.  It’s just one of those things you really have to see for yourself.

4.  Bridge to Terabithia - Enjoyable film with fantasy elements that’s really made for kids.  But, um, I would watch it before showing it to young children cause it’s a teensy bit of a downer - seriously.

5.  Heroes (Season 1) - I’m not a fan of this series, but I do think the first season is worth seeing.

6.  Enchanted - I was surprised at how hilarious this film was.  Amy Adams is great in the lead role.

7.  The 13th Warrior -  I didn’t have high hopes going in but I was pleasantly surprised.  Good film if you are in the mood for action and swordplay.

8.  Unbreakable - I am totally down with the M. Night bashing.  Ugh, Signs was awful, The Village was dreadful and The Happening was somehow worse (if that is even possible).  Don’t even get me started on Lady in the Water - I had high expectations for it that were completely trashed.  But there is one film of his I disagree with most negative critics on…Unbreakable.  The pacing is really odd and the ”twist” is corny.  But I’ve seen this film many times and I love it.  

9.  The Illusionist - This gets compared with The Prestige quite a bit but it’s a good “magician” film in it’s own right.

10.  Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room - I wanted to include a documentary and this film is both fascinating and appalling.  Geeks gone evil.
