Tumbling Down The Rabbit Hole

by Karnatos on October 17, 2008

Drink MeToday I look back at the stuff I’ve come across during my Internet-travels in the past couple weeks. I will be pulling from links on my tumblog, i am karnatos, and shooting the shit about them.

Some Always Go Right readers might be aware of my tumblog, but for those of you that are not, i am karnatos is where I drop links to things I’ve come across when I am too busy to whip up a post about it. I try to keep the writing to a minimum there; the main goal is to have no writeup whatsoever, just a link and an optional image. I use this format for two reasons; I am too busy to write when I quick-post there, and I want you to form your own opinions on the content I’ve linked to without injecting my personal thoughts on it.

This week we look at the following entries after the jump:

  • Suede Pouch with Leather Stitching
  • Space Invaders Tumblers
  • I Haven’t Had My Coffee Yet
  • Tuttuki Bako
  • Banksy’s Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill
  • If William Turner Painted AT-ATs
  • World’s Smallest R/C Hovercraft
  • Darth Vader Coffee Mug
  • Steam Punk Star Wars by Björn Hurri

Suede Pouch with Leather Stitching

These little pouches really brought me back to my university days; I always had a dice bag tucked away in my backpack. My ruddy leather dice pouch looked very similar to this one. It was hand-made by a man I came across on Spring Garden road in Halifax. He used to set up shop outside of the Public Gardens (across from Smitty’s, if you are familiar with the area). He used to make stuff right there in front of you, and if you took the time to speak with the man, he’d offer to make custom things for you.

I asked to if he could make a leather coin purse for me. I picked the piece of leather, and he told me it would take about 30 minutes to cut it out and hand-stitch it together. It ended up being more like an hour, having the gift of gab I really slowed down his work.

I wish I knew where I misplaced that bag, it’d been lost since ‘96… I suspect someone swiped it (along with my dice!) at a party in my apartment.

Space Invaders Tumblers

I mentioned Space Invaders a couple months ago, this is the 30th anniversary for the classic arcade game, and there’s been no end of merchandise being sold to cash in on the occasion. Well, hype-be-damned! I like these freakin’ tumblers! They’ll be getting a spot on my X-Mas list.

I Haven’t Had My Coffee Yet

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ll know that my mornings are often spent tweeting about my morning quest for coffee in the lunch room at work. I can so completely relate to this image… I had to give it a special spot in my cubicle; it reminds those dropping by that mornings are not a happy time! Heheheheheheh.

Tuttuki Bako

Pardon me folks, but what the helllll is this? Tuttuki Bako wins the WTF award for this post. It’s a box, you are expected to put your finger in it… and interact with the digital inhabitants inside of it. It might be a squishy blob, a person, or a panda. Uuuh, what?

I don’t know how to even explain this one folks, just check it out. This is definitely weird stuff that only the Japanese could come up with. Although it is super strange, it reminds me of an interactive version of Cube World, and I definitely almost bought those at least a couple times… so why does Tuttuki Bako give me the heebee-jeebies? No idea! But my guess is the fingering part.

Banksy’s Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill

I have been egging Aggro Me to go and check this out. Banksy is a very well known grafitti artist, especially with popular internet circles out there that pimp his work.

Well, there’s an exhibit of sorts in NYC these days called ”The Village Pet Store And Charcoal Grill“. It’s a surreal experience, from the videos and images I’ve seen… I know if I lived in New York, I would have been there checking this out by now.

If William Turner Painted AT-ATs

OK, if you are like me you have NO FREAKIN CLUE who William Turner is. Well, he’s a dead guy. A painter actually.

I liked this image because I am just a sucker for all cool things Star Wars. It’s a cool picture! AT-AT, stomping on a ship in the olden days! That’s cool! Oh, here’s the original painting in case you are uneducated like myself - gives you an idea of what work went into adding the AT-AT.

World’s Smallest R/C Hovercraft

OK folks - show of hands. Who’s over 30 and still thinks R/C cars and stuff is cool? Yeah, I knew it. And this is a hovercraft! For $34 this could be a stocking stuffer for that geek on your Xmas list… or for me!

Darth Vader Coffee Mug

Yeap - Coffee again. But this is a Darth Vader coffee mug for $14! Another easy X-Mas gift for a Star Wars fan! Actually, upon second glance, it’s more of a stein. Yeah, checked out the site again and it even points out the flip-top head that makes it more stein than mug. Hey! Darth Vader Beer Stein! Even better!

Steam Punk Star Wars by Björn Hurri

This is by far my favorite link - Star Wars, steam punk, and artwork. I could end it with just that, but I can’t. The image I linked on my tumblog is of Princess Leia… and it’s awesome. Don’t just leave it at that, check out the rest of this guy’s work. I could name each art piece and say it’s awesome.

If you have a few minutes to spare do yourself a favor and check out the awesome artwork at the site these pics are on - Gorilla Artfare has a top notch set of artists, and the style and subject is right up my alley. I spent well over an hour today just hopping from image to image to artist’s site, and back. I get totally and completely sucked into this stuff! Check out their prints too, there’s some damned fine art for sale there, and at very reasonable prices. Everything from Alice to The 2nd Rider - I just love this stuff.
