The Princess Bride Game

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who didn’t love the movie The Princess Bride.  And hey, if you haven’t read the book, it’s completely awesome as well.  So I wanted to like the Princess Bride Game.  I really did.  I think the production values are relatively high for a casual game.  But it still sucks…bad.

This isn’t some hardcore gamer not liking a casual game because it’s casual.  I play hidden object games all the time.  I get excited about the latest Diner Dash clone.  I’m big into casual games.  And I also understand that this game is for a younger audience.  But I don’t think it works for kids either.  Maybe the problem is that the designers attempted to make the game appealing to both young gamers and adults feeling nostalgic about the movie.  They should have went completely one way or the other, because it ends up working for neither.

I have no problem with the general look of the game.  It’s simple and pleasing enough to the eye.  The cut scenes are nicely animated, if a bit on the generic side.  The voice overs sound just like the movie, and I mean exactly - there’s nothing new here.  But if you’re buying the game for that, you may as well just see the movie.  When you buy a game you expect to have fun playing it.  That’s where this game falls apart.  The main strategy is to include the most popular casual games.  Each “episode” is a completely different type of casual game.  That sounds fine and it does keep things fresh.  But the problem is that none of these “episodes” are really any fun and the game has zero replay value.
