Return of Good Old Games

by Aggro Me on October 6, 2008

I briefly mentioned the Good Old Games service in a previous post. Good Old Games (still in beta) offers classic PC games at a reasonable price (mostly $5.99) for download. What’s nice is that the games are DRM free. Once you pay for a game, you can download it as many times as you want to as many computers as you want. All of the games are guaranteed to work in Vista or XP.  I’m updating now since I signed up for the beta when I wrote my original post and have since had a chance to check out the actual site.

The interface is user-friendly and polished.  I had no trouble navigating or figuring out how things worked.  But, of course, the most important thing is the games.  There are around 35 games currently available. The current top 10 selling games are: Fallout, Fallout 2, Freespace 2, Fallout Tactics, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Freespace + Expansion, Descent + Descent II, Toca Race Car Driver 3, Sacrifice and Redneck Rampage Collection. Each of those costs $5.99 except for Toca which is $9.99.

I decided to test the service by purchasing a game. I love Fallout and Fallout 2, but I’ve actually never played Fallout Tactics which is weird because I love squad based strategy games (like Jagged Alliance 2 which is also available on GOG).  Purchasing Fallout Tactics was very simple - not a lot of fields to fill out.  You can use GOG’s downloader app to download your game (and it works well) but they also give you the option to just download directly.  I like having the choice…it’s nice not having a downloader rammed down your throat for a change.
