This series usually doesn’t crack the top 10 lists. I think it’s because the ending sucks, the plot is weak and it’s unfavorably compared to it’s director’s prior series. But I love it anyway. That’s why number four on my list is:
It seems required for every review or discussion of Samurai Champloo to mention that “champloo” is an Okinawan word meaning to mix or mash. And, indeed, the show is a mixed-up mash. It is set in Edo Period Japan but mixes in anachronistic elements such as graffiti and beatboxing. The music is a mix of hip-hop and traditional Japanese music. Visually, the camera often cuts quickly and features weird angles, accompanied by the sound of a DJ mixing a record. There are somber, dramatic stories but also episodes filled with comedy.
