Geek Travel: Las Vegas

by Aggro Me on August 12, 2008

There is a lot going on in Las Vegas. You can go from a cheesy lounge show to the solitude of the Mojave desert in a matter of minutes.  But what in Vegas is especially fun for geeks?  I’m no local, but I’ve aimed in this post to list some of the best geek activities and locales in Vegas.  If you have any comments, suggestions or tips let me know and I’ll continue to update this guide.

Okay, so your first stop has to be the Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton.  I say it has to be first because it’s closing on September 1st.  It’s a shame because the whole thing is pretty awesome.  There’s a museum with tons of Trek paraphernalia and two great rides (one Borg and one Klingon).  But the best part is probably just hanging out at Quark’s Bar.  You can meet tons of friendly Star Trek fans and enjoy a “Warp Core Breach.”  Check it out while you still can.

For a gamer like me, one of the highlights of any Vegas trip is definitely a visit to the Pinball Hall of Fame. You can read an L.A. Times article about it here (.pdf link).  While this place is a museum, it’s not about just looking.  All these awesome pinball machines are available to play, and all are kept in great condition.  This is a fantastic opportunity to try a myriad of machines from different decades and have a great time doing it. What’s more, there’s no admission and all of the profits from the machines (25 or 50 cents to play) after the costs of upkeep go straight to charity.
