D&D Humor

by Anski on July 27, 2008

Part of our salute to Gary Gygax:

Humor, it’s all around us! At work, at home, on the bed, on the floor, on the towel by the doo… oops, wrong subject! As part of our salute to Gary, we thought that we would share our favourite bits of D&D humor. Hopefully you’ll like them too!

Anski’s picks:

I absolutely had to go for the Dead Alewives skit. I discovered this little bag of hilarity a little later than most, probably, but I still think it is one of the best. My first experience with it was in the PS2 game, Summoner(video link there). I can’t remember how many times I watched it there, and how many people I shared it with, but I do know that quotes from that skit still make it into conversations between me and my pals to this day.

My Favorite 5 Geek Movies of All Time

by Aggro Me on July 27, 2008

Okay, I have to to start off with a definition here.  These are not movies loved by geeks, like Star Wars or Monty Python and the Holy Grail.  These are great movies which feature true geek heroes!  So here we go, in reverse order:

5.  Hackers - I never get tired of watching this flick.  I still haven’t quite figured out the connection between hacking ability and inline skates.  And I never did track down the l33t hacker club shown in the film. But that doesn’t make me love it any less.  From the opening hacker battle over control of a robot arm, to the great hack-off between Crash Overide (formerly ZeroCool) and Acid Burn (I love these names), to the struggle with the Plague, to the romantic hack in the finale, it may not be an accurate portrayal but it’s more fun than hacking a sprinkler system.

Zero Cool? Crashed fifteen hundred and seven computers in one day? Biggest crash in history, front page New York Times August 10th, 1988. I thought you was black man. Yo, this is Zero Cool!”  - Lord Nikon

The Anubis Murders

by Aggro Me on July 27, 2008

Part of our salute to Gary Gygax:

After we decided to launch Always Go Right on Gary Gygax’s birthday, I decided I should read one of his novels.  I had never done so in the past, so I set out to remedy that by ordering one of his fantasy works, The Anubis Murders.

Since I’m very familiar with the genre of fantasy literature, the fact that I had never really heard any buzz on any Gygax novels meant my expectations were pretty low.  Based on the fact that D&D is, at it’s core, a pastiche of sword and sorcery fiction, I figured the Anubis Murders would be a generic sword and sorcery tale.  I also assumed the writing would not be great or I would have heard more about his novels.  Well, the writing isn’t great, but it isn’t bad either.  What really surprised me was that the tale isn’t generic at all.

I was expecting a classic hero’s journey in a fantasy setting, but what I got was a Sherlock Holmes mystery in a fantasy setting, with a lot more sexual tension between Holmes and Watson.

Our Salute To Gary Gygax

by Aggro Me on July 27, 2008

When picking our launch date for Always Go Right, we discussed a variety of options.  We threw out various holidays and famous dates as possibilities but none felt right.  The moment we discovered that Gary Gygax was born on July 27th, we immediately agreed that this was the perfect day.  So in his honor, welcome to Always Go Right!

I’m sure you know who Gary Gygax is but even if you somehow don’t, know that his work has touched your life in a myriad of ways.  He was a gamer who co-created easily one of the most important games ever.  Gary Gygax was the co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons.  For the details of his amazing life I direct you to his Wikipedia page, which in turn has links to wonderful articles and interviews with the man himself.  Take a moment to look at the many awards and tributes he received.

But far more important than any award, think for a moment of all the people who have played Dungeons & Dragons.  Think of all the communities and relationships that have sprung from that.  And then consider all the other wonderful creations which owe so much to D&D and how many people they, in turn, have touched.

Welcome to the Next Level

by Aggro Me on July 27, 2008

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.  With this single blog post, so begins our quest for the Fountain of Geek.  We have accepted the call to adventure and we hereby cross the first threshold into the unknown.  Just as Bilbo leaving the Shire for the first time, we are filled with trepidation and unfamiliarity.  But most of all we are filled with excitement and passion, ready to walk the road of trials.

On today, July 27, the birthday of the co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, Gary Gygax, we launch this blog in an effort to bring you all the best in geek entertainment.  Be it fantasy novels or sci-fi movies, the latest comic or a classic anime, a great video game or a pen and paper roleplay experience, a supernatural themed television show or a cool gadget, we will be there.

Our goal is to learn more about the things we love and, at the same time, tell the tales of our experiences.  Perhaps we will pique your interest in some entertainment niche you weren’t familiar with.  Perhaps we can help you decide which products are great and which are lame.  Perhaps we can make you laugh, with us and at us, as we explore the many realms of geekdom.
