American Nerd: The Story of My People

by Aggro Me on June 30, 2008

A new book on nerd culture? Count me in.

It seems the reviews of this book by Benjamin Nugent are pretty positive. On the negative side, I noted that one of the customer reviews on Amazon stated that the book did not differentiate between geeks and nerds, which strikes me as a bit odd. Well, I’ll check it out for myself and have a review.

I managed to dig up this interview with the author on Gothamist.  There’s some good nerd discussion there and (on a random note) the fact that he mentions the 24/7 Ukrainian restaurant Veselka in the East Village brought things full circle for me.  That’s been my favorite post-party snack place for years.

Dr. Mario Online Rx

by Karnatos on June 30, 2008

Dr. Mario Online Rx.I decided to buy Dr. Mario Online Rx for the Wii a week ago. I’ve been playing it a lot in the evenings, and so far I’ve been very happy with this latest version of the game.

I’ve focused most of my play time in Single Player, and a little bit of Two Player action. I’ve yet to play any real matches online, but colleagues of mine say its pretty smooth.

I need to convince them to a match sometime, I am sure I could beat them without breaking a sweat.

Feed the Animals

by Aggro Me on June 24, 2008

Since it looks like Karn is on the musical beat today, I’ll jump in.

Girl Talk recently released an amazing fourth album and it’s available for download on a pay-what-you-please basis (although paying more than 5 bucks adds more download options and more than 10 will get you an actual cd).

Girl Talk is DJ Greg Gillis and his modus operandi is sampling an incredible range of (usually well-known) songs to create his own mix.  I find it to be a great combination of nostalgia and awesome beats.  It’s hard to describe so check out some of his music here.   You can also see some of his insane concerts on YouTube.

1,000,000 Miles Away

by Karnatos on June 24, 2008

Trent Reznor’s doing it all right in my books; he’s got me listening to his music again, he’s got me pumped by simply watching a video of one his new tracks, and he’s got me itching for more.  And let’s not forget we owe the sound effects and music in Quake to Reznor.

In case you are not aware, Trent Reznor is the frontman for Nine Inch Nails. And he’s making headlines with his new free album, right after what was an amazing feat with his previous Ghosts and Year Zero album releases. His new album is The Slip, and it’s gold from beginning to end.

I just finished watching the newest release from NiN, a music video of 1,000,000 on Pitchfork.tv; it’s being publicized as a rehersal for the upcoming Lights In The Sky over North America 2008 tour. If this is what Trent wants to bring to the table now that he’s spun free from his old label, I am ready for it and then some.

Bring it.

Paper Worlds

by Aggro Me on June 23, 2008

I love when I come across some new aspect of geekdom that I never knew existed.  That was the case today when I discovered (via Boing Boing Gadgets) the world of Worldworks and their papercraft fantasy and sci-fi terrain for gaming.  Check out the Maiden of the High Seas - awesome.

If you’re new to cardstock culture (as I am) some video introduction is provided and you can also get a free .pdf guide.

What I love about this website is that the forums are really hopping with ideas, discussion and comments.  And it looks like the company even features fan-made “kitbashes.”

Now, I say I am new to this concept but actually when I was a kid I made my own fantasy terrain for action figures out of various household items.  Tables became cliffs, plants turned into forests and blankets were caves.   This is the same idea…just a lot prettier!

10 Minutes with Canadian Minister Jim Prentice on the DMCA

by Karnatos on June 20, 2008

I can remember when the CBC Radio’s Search Engine show first asked to speak to Canadian Industry Minister Jim Prentice about what is now known as Bill C-61, or more public named The Canadian DMCA. They had declined to speak to the host until the bill was tabled… and now it has been.

Canadians who understand the bill are none to pleased about what the Industry Minister and this bill have to offer. Minister Prentice offered to speak to the show for 10 minutes, and he did… but I am not too impressed with how things culminated. Have a listen to the show for yourself; it’s only the first 1/3rd of the program.

If you want a link to the MP3, grabbit here.

If you want to see the show notes, go to Search Engine’s site here.

[via Boing Boing]

As a side note, I am saddened to hear that Search Engine has been canceled on CBC Radio; it will not be returning in the fall. I wish Jesse Brown the best of luck with whatever metamorphosis the program takes. Search Engine, in its current known incarnation, will be sorely missed.
